Overview
Auli, meaning 'meadow' in the local language, is a celebrated hill station and ski resort located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India. Perched at an altitude of 2,500 to 3,050 meters, Auli offers panoramic views of the Himalayas, including Nanda Devi, Mana Parvat, and Kamat. Historically, the area was frequented by semi-nomadic Bhotiya tribes who engaged in trade with Tibet. The slopes of Auli also served as a training ground for the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force before becoming a popular skiing destination. The temple built by Adi Shankaracharya in Joshimath still exists.Today, Auli is known for its pristine, snow-covered slopes, making it a prime destination for skiing and winter sports. The Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) and the Uttarakhand Tourism Department organize winter sports events to promote skiing. Besides skiing, Auli offers trekking routes, lush meadows, and the Auli Artificial Lake, one of the highest man-made lakes in the world, which provides artificial snow during the summer and monsoon seasons. The Auli Ropeway, connecting Joshimath and Auli, is a major attraction, offering breathtaking views of the Himalayan landscape.
