A Name from Modern Vadodara

Alkapuri is a modern neighbourhood rather than one of Vadodara’s old walled or palace-centred quarters. Its name evokes Alaka, the celestial city of Kubera in Sanskrit literary tradition, a naming style found in several planned residential developments in India. The area’s present identity emerged as Vadodara expanded westwards from its historic core, particularly as new housing, offices and commercial premises were established beyond the older central districts. Rather than growing around a medieval temple, bazaar or fortification, Alkapuri developed through the city’s twentieth-century transition into an administrative, educational and commercial centre.

Post-Independence Urban Expansion

In the decades after Indian independence, Vadodara’s expanding population and economy encouraged development on land west of the traditional centre. Alkapuri became associated with planned residential colonies, apartment buildings, professional offices and improved road connections. The broad commercial routes now identified with RC Dutt Road and Jetalpur Road gradually acquired shops, banks, hotels and restaurants, giving the neighbourhood a mixed residential and business character.
