The Gaekwad Name

Sayajigunj takes its name from Sayajirao Gaekwad III, the ruler whose long reign from 1875 to 1939 shaped much of modern Vadodara. The name reflects the neighbourhood’s connection with the period when the princely state invested in education, public institutions, gardens and civic infrastructure rather than simply commemorating an older village settlement. Although the surrounding area is now intensely commercial, its identity remains linked to the public-minded urban development associated with the Gaekwad administration.
