History of Mass Ave

An Original Diagonal Avenue

Massachusetts Avenue was laid out as one of Indianapolis’s original diagonal avenues in the city’s early nineteenth-century plan, linking the central town area with land to the northeast. Its name reflects the period’s practice of naming major avenues after states, while its angled course distinguished it from the surrounding rectilinear street grid. As Indianapolis expanded, the avenue became a route between downtown and growing residential areas, with shops and services developing alongside houses. The corridor’s form still explains much of its character: buildings face an active linear street, while short side streets lead into historic neighbourhoods including Chatham Arch and Lockerbie Square.

Streetcars, Shops and Civic Institutions

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, streetcar expansion helped Massachusetts Avenue mature into a mixed commercial and residential corridor. Businesses served nearby households as well as people travelling between the northeast side and downtown, and cultural and civic institutions added permanence to the district. The Athenaeum, founded by Indianapolis’s German-American community and housed in its present building from the 1890s, remains an important reminder of the city’s immigrant associations and social organisations. The Murat Shrine, now the Old National Centre, opened in 1909 and reinforced the avenue’s role as a setting for performances, meetings and public life.

Industrial Change and Mid-Century Decline

Mass Ave’s western end also acquired an industrial identity, notably through the Coca-Cola bottling plant constructed on Massachusetts Avenue in the early twentieth century.
