History of Kokomo

Miami Country and Early Settlement

The area around present-day Kokomo was historically associated with the Miami people, whose communities occupied parts of what is now north-central Indiana. American settlement expanded after the federal government acquired Indigenous lands through treaties in the nineteenth century, a process that brought profound displacement and remains an important part of the region's history. David Foster, often credited with founding Kokomo, established a trading post in the early 1840s near Wildcat Creek.
