Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Walking
From the center of Bukit Lawang, head southeast towards the Bohorok River. Cross the river using the pedestrian bridge. Once across, follow the trail along the riverbank for about 15-20 minutes. Look for signs directing you towards Rock Island, which is a well-known hiking area. The scenic route will provide you with beautiful views of the jungle. Make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes.
Public Transportation
If you prefer to take a local taxi or a motorbike taxi (ojek), request a ride to Rock Island. The drivers are familiar with the area and can take you directly to the trailhead. The fare should range from IDR 20,000 to IDR 50,000 depending on your negotiation skills and the distance from your current location in Bukit Lawang.
Private Car
If you are traveling by car, drive towards the Bohorok River. There are parking areas near the river where you can safely leave your vehicle. Once parked, you can either walk along the riverbank for about 15-20 minutes or hire a local guide to take you to Rock Island. Ensure you have sufficient cash for any entrance fees and guide services, which can vary.
