If you are starting from Ambon, the capital city of Maluku, rent a car or hire a driver for a comfortable journey. Head to the Ambon City Square and take the Jl. Diponegoro road heading to the main highway (Jl. Raya Soekarno-Hatta) towards the city of Masohi. Follow the signs towards Banda Islands. This drive will take approximately 4-5 hours, depending on traffic. Once you reach Masohi, take the ferry to Banda Neira, which costs around IDR 50,000 (approx. $3.50) per person and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. From Banda Neira, drive or hire a local guide to take you to Nusantara, Banda, where Mount Api is located.
Public Transportation (Bus and Ferry)
From Ambon, take a public bus from the Ambon terminal to Masohi. The bus fare is approximately IDR 50,000 (about $3.50) and the journey takes around 4-5 hours. Once in Masohi, walk to the harbor and board the ferry to Banda Neira. The ferry ticket costs around IDR 50,000 (approx. $3.50) and the crossing takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Upon arrival in Banda Neira, you can find local transport options or hire a guide to reach Nusantara, Banda, where Mount Api is situated.
Boat Hire
Once you are in Banda Neira, you may also consider hiring a local boat to take you to Mount Api directly if you prefer a more adventurous route. Local fishermen often offer boat services, and prices can vary. Be prepared to negotiate, but expect to pay around IDR 300,000 to 500,000 (approximately $21 to $35) for a round trip.
