Car
If you are starting from Ternate, the capital city of North Maluku, drive south towards the main road (Jalan Raya) that leads to the port of Ternate. Follow the signs indicating 'Pelabuhan' (port). The drive typically takes about 30 minutes. Once you arrive at the port, you need to take a ferry to the central Moluccas. Ferries are available throughout the day and may cost around IDR 100,000 to IDR 200,000 depending on your destination in the Moluccas.
Public Transportation - Bus
From Ternate, you can take a public bus to Sofifi, which is about 1 hour away. Buses leave frequently from the main bus terminal. The fare is approximately IDR 25,000. Upon reaching Sofifi, you’ll need to transfer to a ferry to reach the Moluccas Islands. Ferries from Sofifi to various islands operate regularly, and tickets can be purchased at the terminal.
Ferry
Once at the port in Sofifi, check the ferry schedule for departures to the Moluccas Islands like Morotai or Halmahera. The ferry journey can take from 1 to 3 hours depending on your island destination. Ticket prices vary but expect to pay around IDR 150,000 to IDR 300,000. Make sure to arrive at the terminal early to secure your tickets as they can sell out quickly during peak tourist seasons.
Local Transport
Upon arriving at your chosen island in the Moluccas, you can use local transport options such as 'ojeks' (motorcycle taxis) or 'angkots' (public minivans) to navigate the area. Fares for ojeks start around IDR 10,000, while angkot fares are typically between IDR 5,000 and IDR 20,000 depending on the distance.
