Car
If you are starting from Pontianak, the capital of West Kalimantan, drive east on Jalan Raya Pontianak-Singkawang. Follow the signs to Sungai Pinyuh and continue on this road until you reach the junction for the Trans Kalimantan Highway (Jalan Trans Kalimantan). Take the highway north towards Sintang. After approximately 6 hours of driving, you will reach Sintang. From Sintang, you can continue driving north towards the town of Nanga Pinoh, which is your gateway to accessing Borneo's interior. The total driving distance from Pontianak to Borneo can vary depending on your specific destination but expect at least 10-12 hours of travel time. Ensure your vehicle is in good condition and consider refueling at major towns along the way.
Public Transportation (Bus)
From Pontianak, you can take a bus from the main terminal (Terminal Bus Pontianak). Look for buses heading to Sintang. The journey will take about 8-10 hours. Once you arrive in Sintang, you can catch another bus heading to Nanga Pinoh. Buses run frequently, but be sure to check the schedule as it may vary. The combined cost for the bus ride from Pontianak to Sintang is approximately IDR 150,000-200,000, and from Sintang to Nanga Pinoh, expect to pay around IDR 100,000. Make sure to arrive early at the bus terminal to secure your seat.
Boat (if accessing remote areas)
In some cases, if you're visiting remote areas of Borneo, you may need to hire a local boat from Nanga Pinoh. This can be arranged through local travel agencies or directly from boat owners near the riverbanks. The cost for a boat ride can vary widely depending on the distance and negotiation but expect to pay anywhere from IDR 300,000 to IDR 1,000,000 or more for a private boat for a day trip.
