Getting There

• Car

  From the center of Winterset, head west on W Jefferson St towards 2nd St. The Covered Bridges Scenic Byway starts from this point. Follow the signs that indicate the byway route. The byway is a scenic loop that allows you to visit several historic covered bridges, including the famous Henningson Bridge and the Roseman Bridge. Be sure to have a map or use a GPS for navigation as some bridges can be off the main route.

• Public Transportation to Car Rental

  If you are arriving via public transportation, the nearest major bus service is provided by Greyhound. From the Greyhound station, you can take a taxi to a local car rental agency in Winterset. Once you have a rental car, follow the directions above to access the Covered Bridges Scenic Byway.

• Bicycle

  For the more adventurous, consider biking to the Covered Bridges Scenic Byway. Winterset has several bike-friendly routes. Start at the Madison County Historical Complex, and follow the bike paths that lead to W Jefferson St. Ensure you have a good map, as some parts of the route may not have dedicated bike lanes.

• Walking

  If you are staying in Winterset, you can walk to the beginning of the Covered Bridges Scenic Byway. Starting from the Winterset City Park, head east on W Court Ave, then turn left onto W Jefferson St. It is approximately a 1-mile walk to the byway start. This route is suitable for those who enjoy walking and want to soak in the local scenery.
