Embrace History and Nature at the Julien Dubuque Monument

Getting There

• Walking

  If you are starting from downtown Dubuque, head south on Main Street towards 12th Street. Turn left onto 12th Street and continue until you reach Central Avenue. Turn right onto Central Avenue and proceed until you reach the intersection with 16th Street. Turn left onto 16th Street. After a few blocks, you will see signs for the Mines of Spain Recreation Area. Follow the signs to the park entrance. Once inside the park, follow Monument Drive, which will lead you directly to the Julien Dubuque Monument. The walk from downtown should take approximately 30-40 minutes.

• Public Transit

  Start at the nearest bus stop in downtown Dubuque and take the Keyline Transit bus (Route 2 or Route 4) towards the Mines of Spain Recreation Area. Make sure to check the schedule for the latest times. You will get off at the closest stop to the park entrance. From there, walk along Monument Drive, which leads directly to the Julien Dubuque Monument. The total travel time, including waiting for the bus, may take around 45 minutes to an hour.

• Biking

  If you're renting a bike or have your own, begin your journey from downtown Dubuque and head south on Main Street. Continue on Main Street until you reach 12th Street, then turn left. Follow 12th Street until you reach Central Avenue and turn right. Continue on Central Avenue until you reach 16th Street, at which point you will turn left. Follow the signs directing you to the Mines of Spain Recreation Area. Once you enter the park, follow Monument Drive directly to the monument. Biking should take around 20-30 minutes depending on your pace.
