Discover more about Newton Community Theatre

The Newton Community Theatre (NCT) stands as a testament to the power of community and the enduring appeal of live performance. Founded in 1963 by a group of women from the Newton Women's Club, NCT has grown from humble beginnings in the old Maytag Ballroom to a cherished cultural institution in Jasper County. In its early years, the theatre group staged productions in a former Four Square Church building until a fire in 1971 prompted the community to rally and raise funds for a new auditorium. In 1976, a new theatre was built on to the west side of the town's new YMCA building. Today, the theatre boasts a 250-seat auditorium equipped with modern sound and lighting systems, providing an intimate and engaging experience for audiences. Backstage, you'll find dressing rooms, a makeup area, storage, a small kitchen, and a workshop. NCT is a proud member of the American Association of Community Theatre and the Iowa Community Theatre Association. The theatre is committed to providing a variety of quality theatrical experiences for people of all ages by offering valued production and performance opportunities within the local communities. From classic plays to contemporary works, musicals to children's workshops, NCT offers something for everyone. Adding to the theatre's mystique is the rumored presence of a long-time resident ghost, affectionately known as T.G. (Theater Ghost). This mischievous spirit is said to have a penchant for playing with the stage and auditorium lights, adding an element of surprise to performances.
