Each village had its own church, communal kitchen, and workshops, fostering a strong sense of community. The colonists excelled in agriculture and various crafts, including woolen milling, furniture making, and meat processing, establishing a reputation for quality and craftsmanship. The Great Depression and changing social values led to the end of communal living in 1932.
