Imes Covered Bridge: A Step Back in Time

The Imes Covered Bridge stands as a testament to 19th-century engineering and a reminder of Iowa's rich history. Constructed in 1870 by J.P. Clark, the bridge initially crossed the Middle River near Patterson, Iowa. In 1887, it was relocated to Clanton Creek near Hanley. Finally, in 1977, it found its permanent home in a park east of St. Charles.The Imes Bridge is an 81-foot-long Town lattice truss structure, distinguished by its pitched roof, a unique feature among Madison County's covered bridges. Covered bridges like the Imes were built to protect the wooden timbers from the elements, extending their lifespan.
