Discover more about Holliwell Covered Bridge

Located two miles southeast of Winterset, the Holliwell Covered Bridge gracefully spans the Middle River. Constructed in 1880 by Harvey P. Jones and George K. Foster at a cost of $1,180, it stretches 110 feet, with a total length of 159 feet, making it the longest of Madison County's covered bridges and the longest remaining timber bridge in Iowa. The bridge stands on the site of the first bridge built in Madison County in 1854-55, which was washed away in a flood in 1876. The current bridge, with its Town lattice truss and unique flat arch reinforcement, carried traffic for over a century until it was bypassed in 1986. A renovation in 1995, costing $225,000, ensured its preservation. The Holliwell Bridge is more than just a historic structure; it's a cultural icon. Immortalized in 'The Bridges of Madison County' , it draws visitors from around the world who seek to experience the romance and nostalgia associated with the story. The bridge's picturesque setting and unique architectural details make it a favorite spot for photographers and nature lovers. Madison County was once home to nineteen covered bridges, earning it the title of Covered Bridge Capital of Iowa. Today, six bridges remain, each with its own story and charm. The Holliwell Bridge stands as a testament to the craftsmanship and history of a bygone era, inviting visitors to step back in time and appreciate the simple beauty of rural Iowa.
