Driving

Nine Eagles State Park is located a few miles east of Interstate 35. From I-35, take Exit 4 and head east on Highway 69 for approximately 4 miles to Davis City. Then, turn south onto Highway J-66/Dale Miller Road and continue for 3 miles to reach the park entrance. There is no fee for parking.

The park's history dates back to 1839 when Allen Scott, a local entrepreneur, settled the area and established a trading post and post office named Nine Eagles. The name's origin is debated, with some believing it came from Scott spotting nine eagles roosting in the trees, while others say it was inspired by a family with nine rowdy children. In 1941, Decatur County residents purchased the land and donated it to the Iowa Conservation Commission, marking the beginning of the state park. Today, Nine Eagles State Park offers a variety of activities for visitors. Hiking enthusiasts can explore nine miles of trails, including a three-mile loop around the lake. Equestrian trails span six miles, also open to snowmobiles in winter. The lake is ideal for fishing, with species like bass, channel catfish, and bluegill. Only rowboats and electric motors are allowed, preserving the lake's clear waters. A swimming beach, boat ramp, and fishing jetty enhance the lakeside experience. The park features three campgrounds with electric and non-electric sites, modern amenities, and equestrian camping areas. A family cabin is available for reservation, offering a comfortable overnight stay. Picnic areas with tables and fire grills are scattered throughout the park, perfect for outdoor gatherings.
