Julien Dubuque, the first European settler in Iowa, arrived in 1788 and obtained a land grant from Spain to work the mines. The area saw renewed lead mining activity during the Civil War. Today, the Mines of Spain is a National Historic Landmark, offering visitors a chance to connect with nature and learn about the region's past.
