Volga River State Recreation Area, located in Fayette County, Iowa, is a 5,700-acre natural haven often referred to as 'Little Switzerland' due to its unique and rugged topography. Established in the late 1960s, the area was initially intended to feature a large lake, but geological challenges led to the creation of the smaller, yet equally charming, Frog Hollow Lake. Today, the park offers a diverse range of outdoor activities throughout the year.The park's landscape is characterized by old steel bridges crossing the Volga River, striking rock formations, and a mix of prairie and woodland. Visitors can explore over 20 miles of multi-use trails perfect for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking in the warmer months, and snowmobiling and cross-country skiing in the winter.Water enthusiasts can enjoy Frog Hollow Lake, a 138-acre artificial lake known for its populations of bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass, and channel catfish. The lake features a three-lane boat ramp, a floating fishing pier, and shoreline access, making it ideal for boating, canoeing, and fishing. The Volga River itself meanders through the southern part of the area, offering opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass, and channel catfish.For those interested in camping, Volga River State Recreation Area offers two campgrounds: Lakeview Campground and Albany Campground. Lakeview Campground provides modern amenities such as electric hookups, showers, and restroom facilities. Albany Campground caters to equestrian campers with hitching posts and access to equestrian trails.The park is also a popular hunting area, with opportunities to hunt waterfowl, small game, wild turkey, and whitetail deer during open seasons.
