Originally named Queen Alia Square, it was established in 1937 and later renamed Tahrir Square to commemorate Iraq's liberation.The centerpiece of the square is the Freedom Monument (Nasb al-Hurriyah), created by sculptor Jawad Saleem and architect Rifat Chadirji, and opened in 1961. The monument commemorates Iraq's declaration of independence and depicts the events of the 14 July Revolution. The fourteen bronze castings feature twenty-five figures on a travertine slab, referencing ancient Mesopotamian art.
