Discover more about Rabban Hormizd Monastery

Rabban Hormizd Monastery, carved into the mountains near Alqosh, stands as a testament to centuries of Christian history in Iraq. Founded around 640 AD by Rabban Hormizd, the monastery has been a vital center for the Assyrian Church of the East and later the Chaldean Catholic Church. The monastery's remote location, about 2 miles from Alqosh and 28 miles north of Mosul, provided a haven for monks seeking solitude and spiritual growth. The complex is built into the mountainside, with a central church surrounded by cells and rooms, all constructed directly on the bedrock. Caves dot the mountainside, once serving as dwellings for hermits.Over the centuries, Rabban Hormizd Monastery became an important seat for the Patriarchate of the Church of the East. It served as the official residence of the Eliya line of patriarchs from 1551 to the 18th century, with nine patriarchal graves still present in the corridor leading to Rabban Hormizd's cell. The monastery also played a role in the emergence of the Chaldean Catholic Church, with Yohannan Sulaqa, a monk from the monastery, becoming the first Chaldean Catholic Patriarch in 1552.Despite its rich history, the monastery has faced numerous challenges, including attacks by Kurds and the Mongols, as well as outbreaks of disease. In 1859, a new monastery, Our Lady of the Seeds, was built closer to Alqosh to provide a safer and more accessible location for the monks. However, Rabban Hormizd Monastery remains an important historical and religious site, attracting pilgrims and visitors who come to admire its architecture, explore its caves, and learn about its fascinating past.
