History of Babel

Babel, also known as Babylon, was founded around 2300 BCE by the ancient Akkadian-speaking people of Mesopotamia. Located along the Euphrates River, it became a major city under the rule of Hammurabi, who established the Babylonian Empire and codified one of the earliest and most comprehensive legal codes, the Code of Hammurabi.
Hammurabi ruled Babylon from 1792 to 1750 BCE and is best known for his legal code, which consisted of 282 laws covering various aspects of daily life. His reign marked the height of Babylon's power and cultural achievement, establishing the city as a center of commerce, law, and literature.
One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were said to have been built by King Nebuchadnezzar II for his wife, Amytis. While their existence remains a topic of debate among historians, they were described as an extraordinary series of tiered gardens containing a wide variety of trees, shrubs, and vines, irrigated by a complex system of pumps.
Nebuchadnezzar II, who reigned from 605 to 562 BCE, is often regarded as the greatest king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire. Under his rule, Babylon underwent extensive rebuilding and embellishment, including the construction of the Ishtar Gate and the Etemenanki Ziggurat, which some believe inspired the Biblical story of the Tower of Babel.
Constructed during the reign of Nebuchadnezzar II, the Ishtar Gate was one of the eight gates of the inner city of Babylon. Adorned with images of dragons and bulls, it was dedicated to the goddess Ishtar and served as a grand entrance to the city. Parts of the gate have been reconstructed and are now displayed in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin.
Babylon fell to the Persian Empire in 539 BCE under the leadership of Cyrus the Great. The city was taken without a fight, as detailed in the Cyrus Cylinder, which describes Cyrus's policy of religious and cultural tolerance. Babylon continued to be an important administrative center under Persian rule.
Alexander the Great captured Babylon in 331 BCE after defeating the Persian king Darius III. Enamored by the city's grandeur, Alexander planned to make Babylon the capital of his empire. However, his untimely death in 323 BCE in the palace of Nebuchadnezzar II marked the beginning of the city's decline.
After Alexander's death, Babylon gradually declined and fell into ruin. By the 2nd century CE, it had been largely abandoned. The site was rediscovered in the 19th century by European archaeologists, leading to extensive excavations in the 20th century that unearthed many of its ancient structures, including the Processional Way and several temples.
