Martyr Monument: A Symbol of Remembrance

The Al-Shaheed Monument, also known as the Martyr's Memorial, stands as a powerful symbol of remembrance in Baghdad. Designed by Iraqi sculptor Ismail Fatah al-Turk and architect Saman Kamal, the monument was erected between 1981 and 1983, during the height of the Iran-Iraq War, and officially opened in 1983. A 190-meter circular platform sits in the center of an artificial lake, supporting a 40-meter tall split turquoise dome.
