Discover more about Martyr Monument

The Martyr Monument, or Al-Shaheed Monument, stands as a poignant reminder of the Iran-Iraq War and a tribute to all Iraqi martyrs. Constructed between 1981 and 1983, during the height of the war, the monument was designed by Iraqi sculptor Ismail Fatah al-Turk and architect Saman Kamal. It was intended to honor the soldiers who died in the conflict. The monument's design is both striking and symbolic. A large, circular platform, 190 meters in diameter, sits in the center of an artificial lake. Upon the platform rests a 40-meter tall split turquoise dome, reminiscent of Abbasid-era architecture. The two halves of the dome are intentionally offset, revealing an eternal flame in the center, symbolizing life and martyrdom. Beneath the monument lies a museum, library, gallery, and lecture hall, providing context to the war and the sacrifices made. The surrounding area features parks, playgrounds, walkways, and bridges, creating a space for reflection and remembrance. While originally dedicated to the Iran-Iraq War, it has become a memorial for all fallen Iraqis in all wars. The monument offers visitors a chance to pay their respects to those who lost their lives in violence.
