Overview
The Basra Cultural Museum, located in the city of Basra, offers visitors a glimpse into the region's rich cultural heritage. Established in a former palace of Saddam Hussein, the museum is a symbol of Basra's rebirth and commitment to preserving its history.The museum's collection includes artifacts from Mesopotamian, Babylonian, Persian, and Islamic periods, some dating back to 6000 BCE. Exhibits narrate the region's history from ancient civilizations to modern times. The museum also features a library with approximately 3,000 books donated by the British Institute for the Study of Iraq, promoting the country's history and heritage.Following the Iraq War, the palace was repurposed as a museum, opening its first gallery in September 2016 and officially opening to the public in March 2019. The museum now has four galleries: Babylon, Sumer, Assyria, and Basrah Gallery.
