From Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, drive northeast towards Choman. The journey takes approximately 3.5 hours. In Choman, you can find lodging and guides. From Choman, a 4x4 vehicle is recommended to navigate the muddy access roads leading towards the mountain's base. Be prepared for military checkpoints along the way. Hiring a local driver with knowledge of the area is advisable.
Taxi
Taxis can be hired from Erbil to Choman, though it's a relatively long and expensive journey. Expect to pay around 75,000-100,000 IQD (approximately $50-$70 USD) for a one-way trip. Negotiate the price beforehand. From Choman, arrange for a local taxi or guide with a vehicle to take you as far as possible towards the mountain's base. This may cost an additional 25,000-50,000 IQD ($17-$34 USD), depending on the distance and road conditions.
