Halgurd Mountain, rising to an elevation of 3,607 meters (11,834 feet), is a prominent feature of the Zagros Mountain range in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. While Cheekha Dar, located on the Iranian border, is slightly taller, Halgurd is the highest peak entirely within Iraqi territory, making it a popular destination for those seeking to conquer the country's tallest mountain. The mountain holds cultural significance for the Kurdish people and is part of the Halgurd-Sakran National Park, a protected area known for its ecological richness and diverse flora and fauna. The slopes of Halgurd are used for summer grazing by nomadic Kurdish pastoralists, and the area is dotted with villages at lower elevations where locals grow vegetables and raise livestock.Hiking Halgurd is a challenging but rewarding adventure, with trails that wind through rocky terrain, lush valleys, and past cold springs. The best time to visit is during the spring and fall months when the weather is mild and the trails are more accessible. In spring, wildflowers bloom across the lower elevations, while the upper peaks retain their snow. Summer offers clear skies and panoramic views, while autumn brings a tapestry of gold and rust colors to the landscape. Winter ascents are possible for experienced mountaineers, but require careful planning and preparation due to harsh conditions and the risk of snow and ice.Visitors should be aware that some areas around Halgurd Mountain are known to contain landmines from past conflicts, so it's essential to stay on marked trails and follow the guidance of local authorities or experienced guides.
