Mudhafaria Minaret: A Timeless Icon of Erbil

The Mudhafaria Minaret, also known as the Choli Minaret, is a captivating historical landmark located in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Dating back to the late 12th century, specifically between 1190 and 1232 AD, this impressive structure was built during the reign of Muzaffar al-Din al-Kawkaboori, a Turkoman prince who served as the governor of Erbil under Saladin. The minaret is believed to be the only remaining part of the Muzaffariya Mosque, built during Erbil's medieval expansion.Standing at approximately 36 meters (118 feet) tall, the Mudhafaria Minaret showcases the architectural style prevalent during the Ayyubid Kurdish Empire. The minaret comprises a high octagonal base and a cylindrical shaft, connected by a balcony. The octagonal base is adorned with two tiers of niches featuring pointed arches, adding to its intricate design. The shaft tapers inward and is decorated with bands of interlocking diagonal Hazar-Baf motifs and Kufic calligraphy, displaying the names of Muhammad and Mas'oudi Muhammadi, the minaret's builders. Inside, two independent spiral staircases ascend, a design believed to have contributed to the minaret's enduring stability.Over the centuries, the Mudhafaria Minaret has become an iconic symbol of Erbil, often referred to as the "City of Citadel and Minaret". Despite facing wear and conflicts, the minaret has stood the test of time, representing Erbil's rich cultural heritage. In 1935, the Iraqi government recognized its significance and designated it as a heritage site, with restoration work carried out in 1960. Today, the minaret is situated in Minare Park, offering a serene setting for visitors to appreciate this architectural gem.
