Discover more about Liberation Square

Liberation Square, known locally as Saha al-Tahrir, is a focal point of Baghdad, steeped in history and culture. Established in the mid-20th century, the square was designed to represent Iraq's modern identity, commemorating the country's liberation from British occupation. Over the years, it has served as a venue for public celebrations, political events, and demonstrations, most notably the 2019 Iraqi protests. The square is home to the iconic Freedom Monument (Nasb al-Hurriyah), a bronze monument that commemorates Iraq's declaration of independence. Designed by Iraqi sculptor Jawad Saleem and architect Rifat Chadirji, the monument depicts events from the 14 July Revolution and incorporates elements of ancient Mesopotamian art. The garden at the square was first established by King Ghazi and was originally known as the Garden of King Ghazi, later changed to al-Umma Garden ("Garden of the Nation") and is recognized as one of the most important features of the square. It is surrounded on both sides by the Nasb al-Hurriyya monument, and a large painting done by Iraqi artist Faiq Hassan. A third artistic sculpture called "The Mother Statue" is also located in the garden. Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls, engage with local vendors, and witness the vibrant life of Baghdad unfold around them. The square is often adorned with art installations and local performances, adding to its charm and appeal. As the sun sets, Liberation Square transforms into a picturesque scene, with the surrounding lights reflecting off the fountains and pathways. Engaging with locals at the square can provide valuable insights into their daily lives and the historical significance of this landmark.
