Dere Castle, situated 38 kilometers from Erbil in the Pirmam Mountain Range, is a historical site with roots stretching back to the Assyrian era. Rebuilt during the Soran Emirate, particularly under Mir Mustafa, father of Mir Mohammed, it served as a crucial point for monitoring trade routes between 1800 and 1838 AD. The castle's strategic location allowed it to oversee routes connecting Soran with neighboring regions like Qajar Iran and Ottoman Turkey. Constructed on a high hill, the castle featured a robust military wall with security slits. Within its walls were five rooms, a hall, a large courtyard measuring 23 x 21.70 meters, and a well. The castle also had six towers used as guard posts to monitor trade and travel between Mosul, Iran, and Turkey. Though now in ruins, with wall remains standing between 1 to 6 meters high, Dere Castle once played a vital role in protecting the Emirate's interests. Despite its deteriorated state, Dere Castle continues to attract tourists, especially during the spring months. Visitors like Basim Khalid from Baghdad appreciate the site for embodying the history of a nation and the rich archaeological heritage of Kurdistan. While the castle has suffered damage and neglect over the years, there are ongoing discussions and plans for potential restoration to preserve this significant cultural landmark.
