Kani Bast Waterfall: Kurdistan's Frozen Jewel

Kani Bast Waterfall, nestled in the Balakayati area of Erbil Governorate, is a captivating natural wonder. The name 'Kani Bast,' translating to 'Frozen Spring,' hints at the waterfall's tendency to freeze during the harsh winter months. Fed by melting snow and natural springs, the waterfall cascades down from a height of 36 meters, making it the tallest in the Kurdistan Region. The waterfall is located approximately 155 kilometers northeast of Erbil, in Wallze village, between the town of Choman and city of Soran. The journey to Kani Bast is an experience in itself, with the waterfall being framed by the Kokha and Sheikh Nasir mountains. The water is incredibly fresh and cold, originating from the mountainous Balakayati area. The surrounding landscape is adorned with trees and flowers, creating a picturesque setting. Kani Bast's beauty is so renowned that it was chosen to be featured on the 50,000 Iraqi dinar note. Despite its allure, the waterfall remains somewhat inaccessible due to the rugged and unpaved road leading to it. The local authorities recognize the potential of Kani Bast, not only as a tourist attraction but also as a source of electricity for the local residents.
