Shaqlawa, a city of approximately 25,500 people, is located in the Erbil Governorate of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Situated 51 km northeast of Erbil, it lies at the bottom of Safeen Mountain, between Safeen and Sork mountains, at an elevation of 1066 m above sea level. The city is celebrated for its waterfalls, abundant trees, and lush greenery, offering a temperate climate that has historically made it a beloved summer resort. Shaqlawa boasts a rich history, with influences from ancient Assyrian and Babylonian civilizations, as well as later Islamic empires. The town has been a significant site during Kurdish uprisings and conflicts in Iraq. It is also known for its diverse religious communities, with a mix of Kurdish Muslims and Assyrian Christians who have coexisted for decades. Historically, a Jewish population also lived in Shaqlawa.     Public Transport

    To reach Shaqlawa from Erbil, head to the main bus station near the Citadel. Look for buses or shared taxis heading to Shaqlawa. The fare ranges from 1,000 to 2,000 Iraqi Dinar (approximately $0.70 to $1.40 USD). The journey takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on traffic, and drops you off in the center of Shaqlawa.

    Taxi

    Taxis are readily available from anywhere in Erbil to Shaqlawa. Negotiate the fare beforehand; it should be around 15,000 to 20,000 Iraqi Dinar (approximately $10 to $14 USD). The taxi ride takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

    Driving

    From Erbil city center, drive north on Salahaddin Road (Erbil-Shaqlawa Road). Continue for about 20 kilometers until a roundabout, take the second exit to stay on Salahaddin Road. After approximately 8 kilometers, signs for Shaqlawa will appear. Turn right and continue for another 5 kilometers to reach Shaqlawa. Parking is available in the town, but it can be limited during peak tourist season.
