Sami Abdulrahman Park, sprawling across approximately 800 acres (200 hectares), stands as a testament to Erbil's commitment to providing green spaces for its residents and visitors. The park offers a wide array of attractions and facilities, including gardens, lakes, cafes, markets, and restaurants, making it a popular destination for families and individuals alike. Originally, the area served as a military base during the Ba'athist regime. Following the Kurdistan uprising in the early 1990s, the Kurdistan Regional Government allocated 800 acres to develop a public park. The park was constructed in two phases, with the first phase completed in 1998 and the second in 2000. It officially opened to the public on March 14, 2000, as a general park. In 2004, the park was renamed in honor of Sami Abdulrahman, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, who was killed in the February 1, 2004 bombings. Abdulrahman had personally overseen and supported the park's construction, making the renaming a tribute to his contributions. The park is not only a recreational space but also features a black monument inscribed with the names of those who died in the February 1st bombing. Recent developments include a water recycling project that reuses treated wastewater for irrigation. While offering a peaceful retreat, the park also hosts events like wedding celebrations, for which permits are required.
