Located just south of the Erbil Citadel, the Qaysari Bazaar, also known as bazarri qaysari, has been a central part of Erbil's commercial and cultural life for centuries. Believed to have been built in the late 12th century, the bazaar is a sprawling network of narrow, covered lanes, offering a sensory overload of sights, sounds, and smells. As you wander through the bazaar, you'll discover a wide array of goods, including Kurdish rugs, gold jewelry, traditional clothing, and handcrafted items. The air is filled with the aroma of spices, fresh bread, and sizzling kebabs, enticing you to sample the local cuisine. Don't miss the honey and dairy alley, where you can find homemade yogurt, cheese, and local honey. The Qaysari Bazaar is more than just a marketplace; it's a living cultural hub. Here, you can witness artisans practicing age-old techniques, listen to traditional Kurdish music, and interact with friendly locals. The bazaar is a popular gathering place, where people come to shop, socialize, and enjoy a cup of Kurdish tea. While the bazaar has undergone renovations to improve accessibility, it retains its timeless charm. Despite a fire in May 2024 that damaged over 200 shops, efforts are underway to restore the bazaar and preserve its architectural uniqueness.
