The city's name has a few origin stories; one suggests it was named after a man named Sidsadeg, who built the city, while another attributes the name to Mount Sincere in Iraqi Kurdistan. The city has faced hardship, including the destruction of over 23,000 houses and the death of 6,000 people by Saddam Hussein's army in 1988.
