Constructed between 1190 and 1232 AD during the reign of Muzaffar al-Din al-Kawkaboori, a Turkoman prince and brother-in-law of Saladin, it's believed to be the sole remnant of the Muzaffariya Mosque. Standing 36 meters tall, the minaret showcases the architectural style of the Ayyubid Kurdish Empire. Its design features a high octagonal base transitioning into a cylindrical shaft, adorned with intricate brickwork, Kufic inscriptions, and geometric patterns. The base includes two tiers of niches with pointed arches, while the balcony parapet boasts twenty-four small niches. Two independent spiral staircases ascend within, a design said to have been conceived by competing architects, contributing to the structure's remarkable stability.Over the centuries, the Mudhafaria Minaret has served various purposes, from a place of worship to a vantage point for monitoring the sky and guarding against approaching armies. Today, it stands as a cherished landmark, drawing visitors to admire its beauty and delve into Erbil's captivating past.
