    Rising from Minare Park in western Erbil, the Mudhafaria Minaret is a captivating relic of the city's medieval past. Constructed between 1190 and 1232 AD during the reign of Muzaffar al-Din al-Kawkaboori, the minaret is believed to be the only remaining structure of the Muzaffariya Mosque. Al-Kawkaboori, a Turkoman prince and ruler of Erbil under Saladin, oversaw significant urban development during this period, including the construction of schools, a mosque, and the Qaysari Bazaar.The minaret itself is an impressive 36 meters (118 feet) tall, showcasing a distinctive architectural style. It features a high octagonal base and a tall, cylindrical shaft, with a balcony separating the two sections. The base is adorned with two tiers of niches with pointed arches, and Kufic calligraphy displaying the names of Muhammad and Mas'oudi Muhammadi, the builders of the minaret. Inside, two independent spiral staircases ascend, a design said to have been the work of competing architects, contributing to the structure's stability.Over the centuries, the Mudhafaria Minaret has served various purposes, from a place of religious significance to a vantage point for monitoring the sky and warning of approaching threats.
