Discover more about Jasana cave

Jasana Cave, located approximately 50 kilometers west of Sulaymaniyah city, lies in the Surdash region near the village of Gechina. This cave is more than just a geological formation; it's a symbol of Kurdish resilience and a landmark steeped in history. The cave features a triangle-shaped entrance, leading into a cavern that is approximately 40 meters long, 9 meters wide, and 7 meters high. The interior is divided into two sections: a larger front area and a smaller room in the back. During the early 20th century, Jasana Cave became a refuge for Sheikh Mahmoud, the King of Kurdistan, following an attack by the British Army in 1923. It was here that Sheikh Mahmoud established a printing press and published the first Kurdish revolutionary newspaper, "Bangi Haq" (Call of Truth), marking a significant moment in Kurdish media history. The newspaper served as an organ for the Kurdish liberation movement. In more recent times, Jasana Cave served as an important shelter for Peshmerga forces during the Ba'ath regime. Today, Jasana Cave is a tourist attraction, drawing visitors with its historical importance and natural beauty. The surrounding area offers opportunities for hiking and enjoying the scenery.
