حديقة الشهداء, or Martyrs' Garden, is located in Mosul and serves as a poignant memorial to those who have given their lives for Iraq. More than just a garden, it's a place for reflection and remembrance. Originally established in 1934, the garden has a rich history. It was initially a parade ground for the British army during the formation of the modern Iraqi state and was known as 'Manshu Square'. In 1923, after a plane crash that killed two Iraqi pilots, Faiq al-Tai and Mohammed Abbas, they were buried in the garden, and a monument was erected in their honor. The garden was then renamed 'حديقة الشهداء'. Over the years, حديقة الشهداء became a beloved recreational spot for the people of Mosul. It was a place where families gathered, students studied, and travelers rested. Although it suffered damage, including being burned by ISIS in 2017, it was renovated and reopened in July 2021. Today, حديقة الشهداء stands as a symbol of resilience and a place where visitors can connect with Mosul's history and culture.
