Discover more about Grand Festivities Square

Grand Festivities Square ( ساحة الاحتفالات الكبرى Sahat al-Ahtifalat al-Kubra) is Baghdad's main public celebration square, located in Zawraa Park. Constructed in 1986 under Saddam Hussein's direction, it was intended to commemorate Iraq's victory in the Iran-Iraq War. The location holds symbolic importance, believed to be the site where Muslim Arabs defeated the Persians in 636 CE. The square features a large parade ground, a reviewing pavilion, and a reflecting pool. During military parades, Iraqis would gather on the surrounding grassy areas. The Victory Arch, also known as the Swords of Qādisīyah, marks the entrances to the square and is a famous Baghdad landmark. The Monument to the Unknown Soldier is also nearby, honoring war dead. After being closed for two decades, Grand Festivities Square was reopened in June 2023. Al-Mansour Cinema, al-Mansour Theater, and the Fine Art Hall have been restored, aiming to revive Baghdad's cultural role. Today, the square hosts festivals and artistic activities, serving as a gathering place that embodies the spirit and resilience of the Iraqi people.
