Zubaida Tomb: A Shrine of History and Architectural Splendor

The Zubaida Tomb, more accurately known as the Zumurrud Khatun Tomb, stands as a remarkable testament to Baghdad's rich spiritual and architectural heritage. Located in the Sheikh Maarouf Cemetery in the Karkh district, this historic shrine is often mistakenly attributed to Zubaida bint Ja'far, the wife of Caliph Harun al-Rashid. However, historical research suggests the tomb is dedicated to Zumurrud Khatun, the Turkish mother of the Abbasid Caliph Nasir Li-Din Allah, who died in 1202. The mausoleum showcases exquisite Islamic design, featuring intricate tile work and captivating domes that attract visitors. The tomb's architecture includes a nine-layered, cone-shaped muqarnas cover capped by a small cupola, rising from an octagonal base. Hazarbaf decoration adorns the exterior, and the light inside the vault emanates from small holes cut in the muqarnas dome, creating a glowing effect. Approaching the tomb, visitors are enveloped in an atmosphere of reverence and tranquility, ideal for reflection. The surrounding gardens offer a peaceful escape.
