Maytham al-Tammar Shrine: A Testament of Faith

The Maytham al-Tammar Shrine, located in the historic city of Kufa, stands as a significant symbol of devotion and cultural heritage. It is dedicated to Maytham ibn Yahya al-Tammar, a revered companion and disciple of Ali ibn Abi Talib. Maytham, originally from Nahrawan, was a date seller known for his unwavering loyalty to Imam Ali.Maytham al-Tammar was known for his knowledge and was a scholar of the Quran. Imam Ali foretold Maytham's death, informing him that he would be hanged for his unwavering love. The Umayyad governor Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad executed Maytham in 680 AD. The shrine marks the spot of his burial and has been a site of pilgrimage and reflection for centuries.The shrine's architecture reflects Islamic artistry, featuring mosaics and decorations. The complex has evolved over time; a structure existed in the 20th century, and in 2011, the mausoleum was rebuilt and expanded into a Shi'ite mosque with two minarets. The dome was replaced with a larger, more ornate one. In 2017, a new zarih (a decorated enclosure) was built around Maytham's grave in Isfahan, featuring wood inlaid with copper and silver. The shrine provides a tranquil environment for contemplation and reverence. Lush gardens surround the shrine, enhancing its peaceful atmosphere. The shrine is open daily from morning until late evening.
