Kirkuk Citadel, located in the heart of Kirkuk, Iraq, is a historical fortress considered the city's oldest section. The origins of the Citadel are disputed, with some believing it was built by the Gutian people around 3,500 years ago, while others claim it was constructed by the Assyrian king Ashurnasirpal II between 884 and 858 BCE. Over the centuries, various empires, including the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, and Ottomans, have contributed to its architecture and fortifications. The Citadel stands on a 40-meter-high mound, offering strategic views of the surrounding landscape. Within its walls, visitors can explore a number of structures, including the Great Mosque, the Green Dome, the Prophet Daniel Mosque, the Al-Aryan Mosque, the Al-Qaysariyah Market, and the Chaldean Church. These religious sites hold significance for Muslims and Christians alike. The Citadel is also believed to be the final resting place of the biblical prophet Daniel. In April 2021, the 42.5-hectare Citadel site was added to the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
