    Discover more about Ur

Ur, located in the Dhi Qar Governorate of southern Iraq, stands as a testament to the dawn of civilization. This ancient Sumerian city-state, known as Tell el-Muqayyar, boasts a rich history dating back to the Early Dynastic period (circa 2900–2350 BCE). Ur emerged as a significant power with its own dynastic rulers, evidenced by the Royal Cemetery, which contained over 2,000 burials, including Queen Puabi's lavish tomb.Under the Third Dynasty of Ur (circa 2112–2004 BCE), the city experienced its golden age, becoming the capital of a centralized empire controlling much of Sumer and Akkad. The Ziggurat of Ur, a monumental structure, was erected during this time, accompanied by a sophisticated bureaucracy that produced countless cuneiform tablets. The city's strategic economic role and religious importance continued under the Akkadian Empire (circa 2350–2150 BCE).Today, visitors can explore the ruins of Ur, imagining life in one of Mesopotamia's most influential cities. The Ziggurat remains the most iconic structure, a towering symbol of Sumerian culture. While in Dhi Qar, one can also visit Nasiriyah, the cultural hub and capital of the governorate, and the Mesopotamian Marshes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Recent efforts are underway to develop Ur into a tourist city, with plans for new museums, hotels, and cultural centers.
