    Discover more about Khan Murjan

Khan Murjan, located in the heart of Baghdad, is a historical caravanserai constructed between 1356 and 1358 by Amin al-Din Murjan, the Jalayirid governor of Baghdad. This unique structure served as an inn for traveling merchants, providing shelter for them, their goods, and animals. Unlike many other khans, Khan Murjan features a covered inner courtyard with massive brick arches reaching a height of 13 meters. The architecture of Khan Murjan is distinguished by its crenelated arches, perforated windows, and Islamic calligraphy. The building consists of two floors, with 22 rooms on the ground floor and 23 rooms on the upper floor. These rooms now house shops selling handicrafts, textiles, and souvenirs, offering visitors a glimpse into Baghdad's traditions. Over the centuries, Khan Murjan has undergone several transformations. In 1937, it housed the Museum of Arab Antiquities. By the mid-1980s, it was restored and transformed into a tourist restaurant, offering an authentic Baghdadi atmosphere. Today, Khan Murjan stands as a vibrant marketplace where visitors can experience Baghdad's cultural heritage through its architecture, cuisine, and crafts. Despite facing challenges like water damage and neglect, ongoing restoration efforts ensure its preservation for future generations.
