The Monument to the Unknown Soldier in Baghdad stands as a powerful symbol of sacrifice and national pride. Constructed between 1979 and 1982, the monument commemorates the martyrs of the Iran-Iraq War and other conflicts. Designed by Italian architect Marcello D'Olivo, based on a concept by Iraqi sculptor Khaled al-Rahal, it is part of a broader effort to instill a sense of national unity. The monument's centerpiece is a cantilevered dome, inclined at 12 degrees and 42 meters in diameter, representing a traditional shield (dira'a) falling from the grasp of a dying Iraqi warrior. Beneath the shield, a cube made of seven layers of metal symbolizes the seven levels of Jannah (paradise) in Islam, with red acrylic sheets representing the blood of fallen soldiers. A spiral tower, reminiscent of the Samarra minaret, stands beside the dome. The monument also includes an underground museum accessed via a shaft with windows that allow light to filter in. Inside, visitors can view exhibits detailing Iraq's military history and honor the soldiers' bravery. The surrounding landscaped gardens offer a tranquil space for reflection.
