Discover more about Slievemore

Slievemore, rising 671 meters (2,201 feet) above sea level, is a prominent landmark on Achill Island, Co. Mayo. Its Irish name, Sliabh Mór, aptly translates to 'big mountain'. The mountain's slopes are steeped in history, with archaeological evidence suggesting human settlement in the area dating back 5,000 years. The most notable historical feature is the Deserted Village, located at the foot of Slievemore's southern slope. This hauntingly beautiful site comprises the remains of almost 100 stone cottages. These cottages were inhabited at various times, most recently as 'booley' houses, used during the summer months while livestock grazed on the mountainside. The practice of 'booleying' ended in the early 20th century, and Achill is believed to be one of the last places in Europe where it was practiced. Today, Slievemore offers several walking and hiking trails. One popular route begins at the Deserted Village, leading to the summit with breathtaking views of Croaghaun cliffs, Keel Lough, Blacksod Bay, and the Nephin mountain range. The climb can be steep and rocky, but the panoramic vistas from the top are well worth the effort. Slievemore is a must-see destination for those seeking natural beauty and a connection to Ireland's past.
