    Discover more about Brackloon Castle

Brackloon Castle, situated in County Galway, is a well-preserved example of a 16th-century Irish tower house with a rich and turbulent history. Constructed in the early 1500s by the O'Madden clan, rulers of the ancient Gaelic lordship of Síl Anmchadha, the castle's location near the River Shannon was strategically important for trade and defense. The castle's design features thick stone walls, narrow windows, defensive turrets, and a machicolation over the entrance, reflecting its original purpose as a defensive structure. The first recorded attack occurred in 1557 when English forces besieged it. Despite changing ownership over the centuries, including a period under Cromwellian John Eyre, the O'Maddens remained connected to Brackloon into the early 18th century. After falling into ruin, the castle was restored in the late 19th and early 21st centuries. Today, Donal and Alison Burke own and reside in the castle, welcoming visitors to share in its history and experience Irish hospitality. Brackloon Castle offers a unique opportunity to explore a medieval tower house that remains a family home, surrounded by the beautiful East Galway landscape. Nearby attractions include Clonfert Cathedral and the Irish Workhouse Centre, offering further exploration of the area's rich heritage.
