Hike to the iconic cross atop Bray Head for panoramic coastal views and a rewarding escape into Wicklow's stunning natural beauty.

4.9

Bray Head, known in Irish as *Ceann Bhré* (meaning 'hill'), is a majestic headland that rises dramatically from the coast of County Wicklow, offering unparalleled views and a rewarding hiking experience. Situated between the lively town of Bray and the charming village of Greystones, this iconic landmark is a favorite destination for locals and tourists alike. The most popular activity at Bray Head is hiking to the summit to see the large concrete cross. Placed in 1950 during the Holy Year, the cross has become an iconic symbol of the east coast and a destination for religious processions. The panoramic vista from the top encompasses Bray, the North East Wicklow landscape, and Dublin Bay. On a clear day, the views extend across the Irish Sea. Several trails cater to different fitness levels. The most direct route to the cross involves a steep, ascending footpath that starts near the free car park south of Bray Esplanade. This climb takes about 30-40 minutes for a reasonably fit person. The Bray Head Loop offers a longer walk with equally stunning views. For a gentler experience, visitors can explore the lower sections of the trail or stroll along the Bray Promenade. Bray Head also boasts a rich history. In 1430, it was referred to as 'Caput de Bree'. The area was later taken over by Richard FitzGerald in 1530. The Dublin-Wicklow railway line, engineered by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, skirts the headland's base, a testament to 19th-century engineering. The line had to be diverted several times due to the challenging terrain. Designated as a Special Amenity Area, Bray Head is also of geological interest. Its Cambrian rocks, including greywacke slate and quartzite, contain trace fossils that are significant to the Irish fossil record.
