Neary's Bar, a Dublin landmark since 1887, offers a step back in time with its meticulously preserved Victorian ambiance. Located just off Grafton Street at 1 Chatham Street, it stands as a testament to Dublin's rich literary and theatrical history. Originally a house and shop owned by the Casserly family, it's believed the property traded as Casserly Tavern until Thomas Neary took over in 1887. The pub's location is also historically significant; Chatham Street itself dates back to 1773. Neary's maintains a strong connection to the nearby Gaiety Theatre, with its back entrance facing the theatre's stage door. This has made it a favorite haunt for actors, writers, and other figures in the entertainment industry over the years. Famous patrons have included Maureen Potter, Jimmy O'Dea, Flann O'Brien, and Ronnie Drew. The pub is known as a UNESCO City of Literature Bar because of its deep connections to the performing arts and literary scene. Inside, Neary's exudes old-world charm with plush crimson curtains, antique lampshades (including some of the last working gas lamps in Ireland), and a grand marble counter. In keeping with tradition, Neary's has no television or music, encouraging conversation and a relaxed atmosphere.
