Discover more about Seán O'Casey Bridge

The Seán O'Casey Bridge, officially opened in July 2005, is more than just a river crossing; it's a testament to Dublin's urban renewal and a tribute to one of Ireland's literary giants. Named in honor of Seán O'Casey (1880–1964), the celebrated playwright and Irish Citizen Army member who once resided in the North Wall area, the bridge serves as a vital link between City Quay on the south side of the River Liffey and North Wall Quay in the Dublin Docklands. Designed by Cyril O'Neill and O'Connor Sutton Cronin Consulting Engineers, the bridge is an elegant cable-stayed swing bridge. Its construction was part of a large-scale urban renewal project undertaken by the Dublin Docklands Development Authority, aimed at revitalizing the area and improving pedestrian connections. The bridge's design features two balanced cantilever arms that swing open, allowing boats to pass upriver. Each leaf, weighing 180 tonnes, rotates on a centre pivot driven through 90 degrees by twin hydraulic cylinders, with interlocked hydraulic nose and tail bolts. Walking across the Seán O'Casey Bridge offers stunning panoramic views of the River Liffey and the Dublin cityscape. The bridge's location makes it an ideal spot to soak in the city's atmosphere, with its mix of locals and tourists enjoying the scenic beauty. The bridge also provides easy access to nearby attractions such as the EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum, the Jeanie Johnston Tall Ship, and the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC).
